PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Nexa Recursos Minerais S.A. is the main metallurgical zinc processing company in Brazil. In the beginning, the fuel for a steam generation was BP Foil, however, in 2015 Nexa signed a contract with Combio Energia SA, a company whose main activity is the production and distribution of steam, hot water and air conditioning with exchange of fuel. Combio started operating inside Nexa in 2017, selling steam generated in the hybrid boiler using renewable biomass as fuel. In addition to reducing emissions, the exchange of fuel has allowed the generation of carbon credits and cleaner and more sustainable production.

CLEAN PRODUCTION

Since 1969, BPF has been used as fuel for Nexa's boilers, but with the project renewable biomasses (wood chips, sawdust and pallets) are used to supply the necessary energy. In addition to the residual pallets of Nexa's activities part of the biomass originates from a plantation destined for Eucalyptus and another percentage originates from suppliers from local industries. The use of renewable biomass results in the production of carbon-neutral and reduction of GHG emissions, yet it encourages the sustainable development of new technologies across the country.

SOCIALCARBON Standard Performance

The hexagon demonstrates the continuous improvement of the project during all verification periods. The Social Carbon Standard encourages the reinvestment of a percentage of the income from the carbon credits in socioenvironmental benefits, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Social Carbon: far beyond carbon, it is social equality.

“We have known and supported Sustainable Carbon projects for 5 years, including visits on site. This enabled us to verify the high quality of the projects, and the relevant impacts they have on climate, environment and community."

— Simon Köppen (Head of Carbon Offset Services na ClimatePartner)
