Chile cancels COP a month before the event

Chile’s president, Sebastián Piñera, reported on Wednesday that the country won’t host the 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP – 25) anymore. The main reason is the protests that have been taking the streets for almost two weeks. At the press report, Piñera informed that the government priority at the moment is to restablish public order and to answer the demands of the population.

The cancellation comes just over a month from the start of the COP, scheduled to take place between December 2 and 13. UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change Patricia Espinosa issued a statement stating only that she is “exploring alternative headquarters options” for the event.

Until now, Germany and Spain offered to host the conference, but no place has been set up officially.
