In order to help air navigation service providers improve their environmental performance, the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization (CANSO) has recently published a best practices guide on carbon footprinting for the sector. Focusing primarily on managing the carbon footprint of infrastructure such as energy buildings and logistics services, the guide aims to provide these services with an alternative that can measure, monitor and reduce their emissions.
The guide, drafted by CANSO’s environmental vertical, was based on several cases of air navigation service providers that have measured their footprint and managed to reduce their emissions. Reports that wish to encourage and offer options to make this business more sustainable.
How Can this happen?
With a vast communication system and navigation infrastructure, combined with the need to operate with security and resilience 24/7, air navigation service turns out to be an energy-intensive business. For this reason they play an important role both in influencing the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and in making operations more efficient, as well as directly in the impact of the operation of their facilities.
There are many reasons why these service providers monitor their emissions, according to the authorities consulted by the guide. Measuring the carbon footprint of a company makes it possible to identify the areas of the business that pollute the most, enabling the implementation of new and innovative low carbon technologies.
A good example
Improving the energy efficiency of a building reduces costs and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions. A good example was the 30% reduction in energy consumption of an English air navigation service provider since it began measuring its emissions in 2008. In the process, this reduction was responsible for US $ 5 million per year in savings, and tens of millions from the program kick-off.
Airports and air traffic systems in general are poorly seen because of their environmental impacts and lack of commitment to social responsibility. Reports of greenhouse gas emissions are able to help these companies manage their sustainability goals and monitor their environmental performance. In addition, it helps to maintain more transparency and credibility towards the public.
