SAO PAULO ( September 21st, 2011) - Since its lunch in 1985, the renowned Rock in Rio music festival has committed itself to being the largest music and entertainment event in the world, but this year the organizers have raised their expectations even higher. Having understood the urgency climate change, the festival's directors have made a decision to calculate and compensate 100% of this year's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, adding "most sustainable" to the long list of the festival’s praises.
"Rock in Rio was born with the principal of contribution to our society", says Tereza Cortes, Rock in Rio`s Coordinator of FOR A BETTER WORLD Social Project. "We understood this as a responsibility of a brand that aims to be the most recognized for featuring music of the world and that is seen as an opinion former for millions of people already".
Besides implementing a rigorous Sustainability Plan to orient its team and partners toward sustainable action, the festival began offsetting its emissions at its other editions in Lisbon and Madrid, making Rock in Rio a 100% carbon neutral event. "In 2006 we were greatly impacted by the message and importance of compensating the CO2 emissions of the event" ... "After conducting an enquiry into 100% of the emissions realized by the production and output of the event, we understood that the major challenge was how to reduce these emissions in the maximum way possible".
This year, being back in Rio de Janeiro, the birth city of the festival, the organizers have decided to implement environmentally-sustainable actions with an impact a little closer to home. For its 2011 edition, Rock in Rio will be compensating the festival's CO2 emissions by partnering up with Sustainable Carbon and investing in our emission reduction projects located in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
The organizers have chosen two projects in particular: Sul América Ceramic Factory in Itaboraí and the GGP Ceramic Factory in Três Rios. These two small-scale factories produce ceramic products like bricks and tiles for the local construction industry. The bricks are fired in kilns that previously burned fossil fuel like heavy oil to generate thermal energy in the production process. Now the Ceramic operates in an ecologically-responsible manner, using renewable biomass such as sawdust and salvaged wood chips instead. Through this switch, the resulting reduction of GHG emissions generates an environmental commodity called “carbon credits”, which companies and even individuals can buy to neutralize their unavoidable emissions.
Cortez explained that they chose to work with Sustainable Carbon this year because "[Sustainable Carbon] has credibility and in addition to the environmental benefits, their projects also have concrete actions towards social benefits".
Through the application of the SOCIALCARBON® Standard, the project ensures that a portion of the revenue earned by the sale of the credits is reinvested in both the factory itself and the community in which it operates. Sul América, for example, uses part of the income earned from the carbon credits to provide basic food staple to its employees, as well as donates construction materials to the local community. Over 150 employees and individuals in the community benefit from the projects’ activity each year.
“Carbon credits are an efficient tool that is necessary for combating climate change”, says Brennan Duty, the Commercial Coordinator at Sustainable Carbon. “When they are linked to sustainable development, an even greater impact is generated that not only complements Rock in Rio's climate change strategy but its image as well”.
To amplify the communication on the topic, Rock in Rio will provide a certificate of carbon neutrality to each participating artist, attesting that the carbon emissions produced to realize each concert were compensated by the organizers of the event, including the transportation of people and materials.
With the ever-growing awareness regarding sustainability and environmental preservation in Brazil, Cortes says " I hope that we can succeed to increase the number of projects generating carbon credits in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and in this way to multiply the benefits of climate mitigation action”.

Cerâmica GGP and Cerâmica Sul América uses the Social Carbon Methodology to monitor and improve the sustainability benefits achieved through the renewable biomass fuel-switching project on an annual basis.
The SOCIALCARBON® Standard monitors the improvements of a project over time, providing assurance and evidence of its contribution to sustainability. The SOCIALCARBON application consists of monitoring the project in six crucial areas of sustainability including: social, economic, technology, environmental, carbon and financial.
